What Is JROTC?

JROTC is a program offered to high schools that teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity. It is a cooperative effort between high schools and the Army to produce successful students and citizens, while fostering in each school a more constructive and disciplined learning enviornment.
JROTC is not a recruiting program. Students are taught about all their options after high school, including: college, trade school, work, and military. Students learn the essential life skills they need in order to be successful. Statistics have shown that students who are participating in the
program do better in school. Their attendence rate goes up by 3%, graduation rates increase by 12%, and the drop-out rate decreases to less than 1%.
This program focuses on making better citizens. Cadets do community service events, service learning events, and help out all around the school. Cadets are rolemodels in and out of the
classroom due to their outstanding leadership and disciplinary skills. Not only are cadets recognized in high school, JROTC cadets are saught after in the college and job market due to their high performance rate and strong sense of self-discipline. Every cadet is expected to always follow and live by the cadet creed, and if they do they will make themselves successful.

Hough JROTC

Within the Hough JROTC program there are many different ways for cadets to be involved. We have several different teams that any cadet enrolled in the program can participate in ranging from academically challenging to physically challenging. Everything that the program does is to create better citizens in the Corps of Cadets and help the community.

Here at Hough, the Corps of Cadets is like a large family. Everyone in the Corps knows each other and it gives cadets, especially the incoming freshmen, a new and good group of friends who look after and take care of each other. Cadets are taught the importance of responsibility and doing the right thing. Because of the lessons learned in JROTC most cadets stay out of trouble and do well in school. Since all the Cadets are taught these lessons and since they all look out for each other, they form very strong bonds of comradery. The bonds formed are strong and lasting and will open many doors for these cadets as they prepare for life after high school and college.

Within the community we participate in color guards for special events, such as memorial day and veterans day, we partner with Junior Achievement where we go to Cornelius Elementary School and JV Washam Elementary School to teach the Kindergardners and First Graders about money and business, and we volunteer to help out with anyone around the community such as helping a gymnastic company move into another building. A lot of times our community service is conducted seperately from the JROTC program here at Hough, but many cadets will volunteer together because they all wish to help out those in need.
